Maine lawmakers have pushed legislation legalizing online gaming and sports betting to the 2024 session.
The bill, which would give Maine’s Native American tribes—known collectively as the Wabanaki Nations—the exclusive right to offer iGaming and mobile sports betting, is one of 17 bills that the Joint Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs voted to carry over to the 2024 legislative session, which starts in January.
Maine has no tribal casinos, due to limitations put in place by the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act. The state’s sole casino is Penn Entertainment’s Hollywood Casino Bangor.
According to Gaming Today, lawmakers could potentially deny a carryover for any of the committee’s 17 bills, but the iGaming bill will likely carry over, since its sponsors are co-chairs of the joint Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
