Maine state Senator Louis Luchini has introduced Senate Bill 1352 which would legalize and regulate sports betting. Luchini introduced a similar bill in 2019. It was passed by both chambers but vetoed by Governor Janet Mills.

Luchini’s bill would put sports betting under the umbrella of the Department of Public Safety Gambling Control Unit. Licenses would be granted to commercial racetracks, OTB facilities, slot machine or casino operators or federally recognized tribes. It would cost $20,000 for a license.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs.

The state would collect 10 percent on brick and mortar retailers and 16 percent on mobile online operators.
