Sales of lottery tickets in Mainland China rose 19.6 percent year on year in the first half of 2018 for a total of almost CNY245.2 billion (US$36.0 billion), according to the Chinese Ministry of Finance.

Sales of lottery products in Mainland China reached almost CNY245.2 billion (US$36.0 billion) for the first six months of 2018, for an increase of 19.6 percent over the previous year, according to the Chinese Ministry of Finance.

Receipts from welfare lottery tickets totaled approximately CNY110.6 billion (US$16.3 billion) in the first half, an increase of 4.2 percent. Sports lottery sales increased by 36.1 percent year-on-year to slightly above CNY134.6 billion, reported GGRAsia.

Guangdong continues to lead the country in lottery sales, which totaled CNY23.0 billion for the half, up 15.8 percent from a year earlier. Jiangsu Province came in second with total sales of approximately CNY20.9 billion, an increase of 28.2 percent. Shandong Province was the third largest market for lottery products in the first half, with sales up 11.5 percent to nearly CNY18.6 billion.

In June, lottery sales skyrocketed 73.2 percent year-on-year, to CNY58.6 billion. The action was chiefly due to a 147 percent jump in sports lottery sales thanks to the FIFA World Cup. Welfare lottery sales reached approximately CNY19.1 billion last month, up 7.1 percent year-on-year.
