Malaysia Weighs Online Gaming Penalties

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zhaid Hamidi says the government will address online gaming at its next cabinet meeting. Though there are currently no laws banning the activity, news reports say it is still considered illegal.

There are no laws prohibiting online gambling in Malaysia, but multiple news reports indicate the government still consider it an illegal act. Therefore, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Ahmad Zhaid Hamidi has announced the matter will be clarified at the government’s next cabinet meeting.

Malaysia’s Common Gaming House Act was initiated in 1953 and last revised in 1983. The act may be revised to include “preventative and punitive” penalties for online gamblers—a move that may discourage offshore operators as well.
