Malta Casinos Challenged by New Entry

The December opening of Olympic Entertainment’s Casino Malta, operated by Eden Leisure, may compel its competitors in the Baltics to step up their games. Olympic operates 97 sites in seven countries.

Hotel location undergoing M upgrade

The December 2015 debut of Casino Malta could enliven the whole market and potentially force competitors to offer better services, entertainment, games and offers.

The new US$13 million entry from Estonian operator Olympic Entertainment Group and Eden Leisure could mean “ferocious competition” for Dragonara Casino and Casinos Avenue, reported the website Innovategaming.com.

Casino Malta benefits from a desirable location at the Intercontinental Hotel, which is now undergoing a $US34 million upgrade, adding two new floors of six-star suites, a 100-room Holiday Inn Express hotel, and revamped meeting and conference spaces.

Casino Malta is now the largest casino in Malta with a 2,700-square-meter (29,000-square-foot) gaming floor. The casino opened with 250 slot machines and 30 gaming tables, plus a sports betting and bar area.

OEG is the largest provider of gaming services in the Baltics with 97 sites in seven countries, reported the Times of Malta.

Armin Karu, chairman of the board of Olympic, said the expansion into Malta is important to the company. “We have been looking for good opportunities to expand to popular holiday destinations for several years now and today we took a large step forward in making our expansion plans come true,” Karu said.
