Malta Seeks Illegal Sports Betting Clarification

Malta’s Economic Secretary has asked the European Court to clarify its definition of illegal sports betting and how it impacts Malta.

Jose Herrera, Malta’s Economic Secretary, is seeking a better definition from the European Court of Justice on what constitutes illegal sports betting.

The request come after publication of the European draft convention on sports competitions. Herrera feels some provisions hinder the free movement of services within the European Union.

Herrera feels illegal sports betting is not suitably defined and could lead to encroachment on Malta’s gambling industry. Malta officials are worried that the conventions support moves requiring licensed companies operating out of Malta to gain licenses in other jurisdictions and countries that are being adopted throughout the EU.
