Maryland Lottery and Gaming barred player-specific prop bets involving colleges and universities as of March 1, joining Ohio in the campaign. The Ohio Casino Control Commission announced its ban February 23. Sportsbooks had to put the decision into play by March 1 as well. The state also required operators to void existing wagers, according to SportsHandle.
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming spokesperson added, “any college player prop bets that customers made on or before Feb. 29, 2024, will be honored, and operators were instructed to remove these markets from their platforms as of March 1.”
The decision “was made in the interests of protecting college athletes from potential harassment related to their individual statistical performances,” an agency spokesperson said.
The NCAA has been behind a move to convince regulators to ban player-specific bets, citing the potential for player harassment should the performance cost bettors a win.
