Maryland Live! owner the Cordish Companies is planning to expand the gaming resort with a new hotel and other attractions to counter the competition coming later this year with the opening of MGM National Harbor.
The state’s gaming revenue leader is investing $200 million in a 17-story, 310-toom hotel, a conference center, a 1,500-seat events center, day spa and new dining options.
Groundbreaking is scheduled for the fall, Cordish said, with completion expected at the end of 2017.
Anticipating increased traffic, the Baltimore-based property giant said the expansion also includes plans for widening the streets around the adjoining Arundel Mills Mall and adding approximately 1,000 parking spaces.
The expansion is expected to add 400 more jobs to the casino’s current 3,000, the company said.
Located in Hanover, Maryland Live! out-grosses its nearest competitor, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, by more than double, but MGM Resorts International’s $1.3 billion MGM National Harbor, the state’s sixth casino, could offer a different level of competition given its location on banks of the Potomac River near Maryland Live’s key Washington, D.C.-and Virginia-area markets.
