Maryland Names New Lottery Chief

Gordon Medenica a veteran of running state and private lotteries has been named director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has appointed Gordon Medenica as director of the state Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.

“Gordon Medenica will bring a wealth of lottery and business experience to the agency,” said Hogan in making the appointment.

Medenica has previous experience running state and private lotteries, most recently as chief executive officer of Northstar New Jersey Lottery Group. He was also previously president of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries and New York Lottery Director from 2007 to 2012.

In that post the lottery set records in increased revenue, reaching $8.4 billion in sales.

Before entering the lottery industry, Medenica was an executive with the New York Times Company. He has also been an executive vice president of the holding company that controls the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.

He replaces Stephen Martino, who departed in March to practice law at a private firm.

One of the new director’s first tasks will be overseeing the state’s sixth and newest casino, MGM National Harbor, a $1.8 billion casino resort that is being built in Prince George’s County.
