Mask Mandates Return to Detroit Casinos

Effective November 23, employees and guests at Detroit’s three casinos, regardless of their vaccination status, are required to wear face masks. The mask mandates are in response to a surge in Covid-19 cases in the city.

Mask Mandates Return to Detroit Casinos

As of Tuesday, November 23, Detroit’s three casinos—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel and Greektown Casino—mandated that guests and employees, vaccinated or not, must wear masks in response to a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The mandate follows the state of Michigan’s recent recommendation that everyone age two and older wear a mask indoors. The casinos will provide a mask to individuals who don’t have one.

MGM Resorts International Midwest Group President David Tsai said, “MGM Grand Detroit remains committed to the health and safety of our guests and employees. To prepare for your visit, please wear a face mask at all times unless you are actively eating or drinking. As we approach the holidays, we hope you stay well and wish you a healthy and happy holiday season. I look forward to welcoming you back safely on your next visit.”

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan applauded the casinos. “What private companies are doing makes great sense. If I were running a casino, I’d do the same thing,” he said.

All three Detroit casinos closed from March to December last year. Mask mandates were removed in June. Smoking bans have remained in force.
