Massachusetts Casino Revenues Plummeted in December

Revenues for Massachusetts’ three casinos plummeted 40 percent in December, the direct result of government Covid restrictions.

The casinos, including the Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park slots parlor, took in a combined $49.8 million last month, which was a 40 percent drop from the same month in 2019, according to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

The Encore’s gaming revenue for the month was $29.3 million, down 46 percent from last year; the MGM Springfield’s gaming revenue was $11.4 million, a 40 percent decline and Plainridge Park’s gaming revenue was $9.2 million, a 10 percent drop from 2019.

Although casinos are not shuttered under the state’s latest restrictions, they are required to operate at 25 percent of normal capacity and close every day at 9:30 p.m.

Governor Charlie Baker’s executive orders are due to remain in force until at least January 24, and possibly longer.
