Beginning next spring, the Massachusetts Lottery will begin allowing players to claim their prizes using an app on their phones.
They will be able to use the app to have winnings deposited directly into their bank account. The tickets will be scannable by phone. Which should add to privacy and convention, according to the Lottery.
Massachusetts Lottery Director Michael Sweeney commented, “Besides doing all the obvious things like meeting our customers where they already are, meeting the modern-day technology expectations of people, it potentially has a huge impact on the environment.”
This change only applies to prizes valued greater than $600 up to $5,000. Prizes less than $600 must be still be claimed at a Lottery retailer.
The Massachusetts Lottery borrowed the idea and implementation of the app from the Ohio Lottery. Sweeney and Treasurer Deborah Goldberg have continued to press lawmakers to allow the Lottery to sell tickets online, which legislators fear would hurt retailers.
