Massachusetts to Vote on Second Slots Parlor

An initiative that would allow a second slots parlor in Massachusetts in on the November ballot in the Bay State. Question 1 would allow the casino to be built in East Boston near the Suffolk Downs racetrack (l.).

Voters of the Bay State in November will vote on whether to allow a second slots parlor, this one near Suffolk Downs racetrack.

Question 1 would authorize a second slots parlor, in addition to the existing Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville that was built under the auspices of the 2011 Gaming Expansion law.

The initiative is being pushed by developer Eugene McCain, who proposes to build a hotel and casino near Suffolk Down in East Boston. He has no connection to the owners of the racetrack, although the language of the initiative is so closely written that only land that is near the racetrack would qualify as a location for the slots parlor.

Although the initiative calls for a slots parlor at that location, it would still require the approval of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for the facility to be granted a gaming license.

Mayor Brian Arrigo of nearby Revere and Governor Charlie Baker are leading opponents of Question 1.

Suffolk Downs was the site of a casino proposal from along with Caesars Entertainment and later the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, which lost out to Wynn Resorts plans for a casino in Everett.
