Boost for tourism
The government of Queensland has announced that a massive casino complex will be built in the waterfront city of Cairns. According to the Cairns Post, State Treasurer Curtis Pitt says the idea was spurred by interest among multiple international investors.
The government will accept expressions of interest through mid-December for a complex that includes six-star hotels, apartment towers and luxury retail options, among other facilities. The complex will be located on approximately four hectares (10 acres) of state-owned land on the waterfront, not far from the city’s existing casino, Reef Hotel.
Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the development will help boost tourism to the region, an industry already worth AU$25 billion that employs more than 200,000 people.
