Partnered with local SME

Melco Resorts & Entertainment says it is the first casino operator in Macau to make extensive use of renewable-energy technology at its resorts in the SAR.

In a news release, the Hong Kong-listed firm said it has installed more than 18,000 solar photovoltaic panels covering close to 30,000 square meters (323,000 square feet) of rooftop space at its City of Dreams and Studio City resorts. It has teamed with a local SME to develop the solar array, which will be the largest in Macau.

Once the system is in place and operating, it will have the capacity to generate a total of nearly 7.7 million kilowatts of energy per year, equivalent to the electricity consumed by 1,500 households. Each year, the system is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 6,000 tons, equivalent to the volume of CO2 that 260,000 trees would absorb in one year, the release stated.

“We are thrilled as a local small and medium enterprise to have the opportunity to collaborate with Melco on this pioneering sustainability project for Macau’s gaming and hospitality industry,” said Sam Liu, director of business development at Man Io Energy. “The vast scale of the system has never before been seen in Macau, and through the ongoing partnership with Melco, our company has gained valuable knowledge and on-the-field experience to establish its foundation as a forerunner in the area of sustainable energy.”

Melco said working with SMEs and supporting clean energy is a “core focus” of its corporate social responsibility.
