Under-30 players go to Melco resorts
Big-spending Chinese gamblers are more at home playing at the properties of Melco Resorts & Entertainment and Wynn Macau, asset management firm Sanford C. Bernstein said in a research paper released on May 18.
The report, titled “China Consumer: Where to Play, How to Win,” revealed that SJM and Wynn tend to attract older customers while people under 30 prefer Melco resorts. People ages 35 to 44 are an important demographic for Macau gaming, and are expected to grow from 3 million to 190 million by 2023, especially in the regions of Guangdong, Hebei and Beijing, the report said.
VIPs and premium mass players contribute 70 percent of Macau’s gross gaming revenues, and that dominance will not “change meaningfully over the next few years” in spite of the new emphasis on non-gaming attractions, according to Bernstein. The report described the typical premium customer as a male in his late 30s who visits Macau at least three times a year with a gambling budget of about $3,130.
In other Macau news, the territory’s six gaming concessions will be re-auctioned and awarded based on new requirements, said Paulo Martins Chan, director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
“The whole process will try to meet the development of Macau,” Chan told the press on the sidelines of G2E Asia. The gaming concessions and three sub-concessions will expire between 2020 and 2022.
