The Malaysian government has partnered with Facebook owner Meta to help curb online crime, including illegal online gambling and online scams.

According to Asia Gaming Brief, official figures show that Malaysians lost about RM330 million (US$70.94 million) to such activities on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in the first five months of the year—up 25 percent over the total recorded in 2022.

In June, authorities pledged to take legal action against Meta for failing to remove “undesirable” posts on those platforms, such as what AGB called “sensitive race and religion-related content.”

Within weeks, Meta joined the Malaysian Communications and Digital Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission as well as law enforcement to patrol online content and activities.
