Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez of the Mexican state of Guanajuato has pushed through a measure to ban casinos and bailes de mesa (table dances) in the region. According to the Panama Post, Márquez, of the National Action Party, contends that such businesses can be used to launder money and also are responsible for compulsive gambling.
Congressman Adrián Camacho Trejo Luna, a member of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s PRI party, says the initiative is unconstitutional because it “encroaches on municipal autonomy.” The federal constitution “clearly stipulates that it’s the role of the Congress of the Union to legislate in matters of gambling and betting games,” he added.
