Mexico May Update Gaming Laws

Casino resorts could be allowed in Cancun and Puerto Penasco as part of an update of Mexico's gaming laws, which originated in the first half of the last century. Subsequent revisions have led to confusion regarding casino licensing and equipment, deterring major operators and suppliers from entering the Mexican market, despite its huge potential.

Sources said casino hotels may be allowed in key economic development areas, such as Cancun and Puerto Penasco, as part of Mexico’s efforts to overhaul the country’s outdated gaming laws dating back to the first half of the 20th century. The Mexican government is said to have presented a new gambling act that will create a gaming advisory board that could permit the casino resorts.

Over the years, revisions and reinterpretations of Mexico’s gaming laws have only caused confusion regarding casino licensing and the type of equipment allowed. As a result, despite the country’s huge potential, many major international casino operators and equipment suppliers have declined to enter the Mexican market, concerned that could jeopardize their licenses in other jurisdictions.
