Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima on September 22 unveiled his work “HOTO” at The Shops at Crystals in Las Vegas as part of MGM Resorts International’s recent effort to embrace Japanese culture.
Miyajima’s work is a mirrored pagoda measuring 18 feet high and more than 6 feet around and inlaid with nearly 4,000 vibrantly colored LED numerical displays in varying sizes that flash the numbers one through nine to represent the never-ending cycle of life and the universal language of numbers.
HOTO is part of MGM Resorts’ larger commitment to exposing Las Vegas’ global audience to Japanese culture.
“Las Vegas visitors are more worldly in their travel habits than ever before and seek provocative, unique experiences,” MGM Resorts International Chairman and CEO Jim Murren said.
“One of the ways we’ve responded to this is by introducing thought-provoking art that stimulates interest and energy. Along with renowned masters from generations past, our vision is to present contemporary and forward-thinking works that fascinate people of all ages, regardless of whether they are art aficionados or casual passersby.”
MGM Resorts recently hosted the Kabuki Spectacle on the Fountains of Bellagio, displayed works by sculptor Masatoshi Izumi, and housed a Japanese-inspired exhibit at Bellagio’s Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
