MGM Resorts International’s .3 billion MGM National Harbor casino, hotel and entertainment complex in Maryland will not open in August as originally stated by the operator. Citing an “overly optimistic” initial timetable, MGM told the Washington Post that the project, the most expensive resort in Maryland’s history, will open later, but in all likelihood before the end of 2016.
The price of the resort also has gone up from its original $800 million estimate. The resort, on the National Harbor mixed-use development on the Potomac River just downstream from Washington, D.C., will include a 300-suite hotel and a casino with around 3,600 slot machines and 140 gaming tables. The project includes a complete slate of restaurants, a 3,0000-seat theater and meeting facilities.
It is the second delayed opening for MGM this year. The operator moved its MGM Cotai grand opening in Macau from late this year to the first quarter of 2017, citing “current market conditions and the timing of other resort openings in the area.”
