Entertainment giant AEG is arena partner

Dan D’Arrigo, chief financial officer for MGM Resorts International, told analysts last month that the company is still working to attract a National Hockey League franchise team or an all-new new home team to Las Vegas.

“We would be supportive of an NHL team coming to our arena. We’re highly interested and we have been in discussions with a group,” D’Arrigo said. He did not offer details about the talks, but speculation is widespread that the company might lobby to bring pro hockey to its upcoming sports arena, now under construction near New York-New York on the Las Vegas Strip.

MGM’s partner in the venture?a $350 million, 20,000-seat sports arena and event center?is entertainment behemoth AEG, owner of the Los Angeles Kings.

Asked about another giant arena now planned for the north end of the Strip, D’Arrigo said, “Competition is always welcome. If they are going to bring in new attractions and amenities, then we are supportive.”

The All-Net Arena, with a price tag of $1.4 billion, is a 22,000-seat sports venue backed by NBA star Jackie Robinson with partner Comcast-Spectacor. The complex will also include a hotel and shopping area.
