MGM Proud of Diversity Achievements

MGM Springfield proudly touted its achievements in diversity hiring and contracting before the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. The developer has exceeded its goals in dealing with women, minorities and veterans.

MGM Springfield is so pleased with exceeding its goals for hiring minorities and women for the 0 casino resort that it is building in Springfield, Massachusetts that it’s going to try to build on that record.

This week the casino developer said that it planned to meet with qualified women, minority and veteran-owned vendors and contractors.

Earlier in the week the company delivered the results of its hiring practices to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Its goal is to have 10 percent of its contractors be owned by women, 5 percent minority owned and 2 percent veteran owned. The report showed that so far it is achieving those goals. As of April 30, 10.18 percent were owned by women, 28.95 percent were owned by minorities, with veterans owning 9.31 percent of contractors.

MGM is also meeting its diversity hiring goals, having hired 6.9 percent women, 15.3 percent minorities and 8 percent veterans out of the more than 1,000 hired so far.

In a related but separate development, MGM Springfield announced that it has no interest in running Springfield’s Symphony Hall and won’t be submitting a proposal to operate the hall until the end of 2018.

The 2,600-seat concert venue is a few blocks from the casino building site. It was built in 1912.

The casino developer IS working with Spectra by Comcast Spectacor on a proposal to operate the MassMutual Center Arena, which is also a short distance from the casino. It does have competition from other bidders.
