“Inspiration Begins With Us!” is the theme of MGM Resorts International’s recently released 2014 Annual Corporate Social Responsibility Report, featuring the company’s accomplishments in diversity and inclusion, philanthropy and community engagement, and environmental sustainability initiatives. Jim Murren, chairman and chief executive officer, said, “MGM Resorts continues to integrate CSR best practices at all levels of our company’s operations and throughout our culture. We firmly believe that our CSR efforts make us both a better company and a better corporate citizen, as we strive to uplift the communities in which we operate and work.”
Murren was named CR Magazine‘s “Responsible CEO of the Year” in 2013.
Among other acts of CSR, MGM Resorts introduced the gaming industry’s first formal diversity and inclusion initiative in 2000; built the world’s largest LEED Gold-certified “green” complex in CityCenter; and rallied employees to donate more than 1.6 million pounds of food in 2014.
In the area of diversity and inclusion, the report noted:
- • MGM Resorts’ managers include 43 percent women and 38 percent minorities.
- • MGM Resorts spent $189.5 million last year with diverse-owned suppliers, contractors and service providers.
- • In 2014, MGM Resorts earned top honors for its diversity best practices from DiversityInc Magazine, Human Resources Officers Today, Universum, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council and Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility.
In philanthropy and community engagement, the report stated:
- • 81 MGM Resorts Foundation grants provided education support to 109,771 children; food, housing and self-sufficiency assistance to 251,980 individuals and families; and medical care and mental health counseling to 9,542 individuals and families.
- • MGM Resorts gave more than 1.6 million pounds of food to the Las Vegas food bank Three Square—the largest single company donation in the nonprofit’s history.
- • MGM Resorts employees volunteered 172,316 hours to nonprofit organizations—the equivalent of $4 million in labor.
And the report said in environmental sustainability:
- • MGM Resorts recycled 56,000 tons of materials for a 2014 recycling diversion rate of 47 percent.
- • Solar photovoltaic arrays on the Mandalay Bay Convention Center will supply 26 percent of the resort’s electricity during peak production.
- • MGM Resorts added 31 compressed natural gas Cadillac XTS limousines to its transportation portfolio.
