MGM Springfield Could Jump the Gun

The MGM Springfield casino (l.) in Massachusetts’ third largest city could open several months ahead of schedule, in the summer of 2018. The $950 million casino is getting a boost because a state highway project will be finished several months earlier than anticipated.

Massachusetts’s 0 million MGM Springfield could open much sooner than expected, in the summer of 2018, rather than the fall, as it had planned.

This change was reported last week by Springfield Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy, who noted that the opening was pushed back because of the rebuilding of Interstate 91. But that project is now way ahead of schedule.

Kenney told a news conference, “MGM has not said this to us. But we know Interstate 91 is five or six months ahead of schedule and we know MGM is on schedule. There is a major insurance agent convention scheduled for Springfield in August 2018. So we never know what might happen.”

MGM wouldn’t confirm that it might open soon, but spokesman Carole Brennan said “MGM Springfield has made great progress this winter and at this time we are comfortably on schedule for a September 2018 opening.”

MGM broke ground on the casino 18 months ago, and is officially halfway through construction.
