MGM to Raise Salaries

MGM China has joined its fellow concessionaires in Macau by announcing higher salaries for eligible non-management team members starting March 19. Workers will see increases of between 2.5 percent and 8.1 percent.

Raises followed January protests

Effective March 19, MGM China will introduce pay raises of 2.5 percent to 8.1 percent for eligible employees. The company called the measure “a cost-of-living adjustment.”

Workers earning up to MOP16,000 (US$2,003) will see their salaries rise by MOP600, for an increase of 3.8 per cent to 8.1 percent. Employees with salaries above MOP16,000 will see their salaries increase 2.5 per cent.

The move followed January protests by front-line workers who said senior staff received the equivalent of three months’ salary as a bonus while the rank-and-file got only one month.

“This unfair practice—also known as the ‘Fat Top, Skinny Bottom’ policy— has made all team members very dissatisfied,” said Cloee Chao of the New Macau Gaming Staff Rights Association.

At that time, a petition with 1,588 signatures was submitted to the company at its new MGM Cotai property to express workers’ dissatisfaction with salary adjustments.

Grant Bowie, CEO and executive director of MGM China, praised the planned increases, saying, “It is very important that we continue to increase our ‘one-team’ mindset and provide exceptional service at both MGM Macau and MGM Cotai.”
