MGTO Uses Influencers to Grow Thai Tourism

The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is enlisting Thai influencers and media to help it generate more travel from that country.

Official data cited by Asia Gaming Brief shows Macau welcomed more than 150,000 visitors from Thailand in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the city. At that time, Thailand ranked as the 10th largest feeder market for Macau.

According to AGB, Macau tourism officials invited 20 media delegates to join the campaign, including “five travel and gourmet KOLs (key opinion leaders, also known as influencers)” along with the hosts of television stations from Thailand, among others. Together, they have about 31 million followers.

Post-pandemic travel to Macau resumed on January 8, following three years of a strict zero-Covid policy that kept the borders mostly closed.
