In Florida, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners recently approved spending $14 million on a feasibility study on a $600 million monorail built by Genting Group and its local partner, Meridiam Infrastructure North America Corporation, connecting the city of Miami with Miami Beach.
The study would take about 18 months, officials said. If it gets a green light, the monorail station would be built on a 30-acre tract Genting purchased in Miami in 2011, where Genting had hoped to develop a casino complex, Resorts World Miami; in 2017 the company received city approval to develop a 300-room hotel and to renovate a connected bus terminal. State gaming laws would have to be changed to make that happen; currently only the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Miccosukee Tribe are authorized to offer casino gambling.
The majority of financing for the monorail would come from Genting Group but from private fundraising and up to $77 million from Meridiam.
