Michigan Casino Doubling, Adding 100 Jobs

The Gun Lake Casino in Wayland, Michigan is doubling its size to 73,000 square feet. The project will bring in 500 new slots for a total of 2,100 and create a 20,000 square foot Harvest Buffet, featuring locally sourced meat and vegetables. The project will create 100 new jobs.

The 73,000 square foot expansion continues at Gun Lake Casino in Wayland, Michigan, with additional slots, a new buffet, larger bar area and more. The project will double the size of the existing facility. More than 500 slot machines will be added to the casino floor, bringing the total number to 2,100. An additional high stakes table area will be opened later. General Manager Brent Arena said, “Especially on the weekends, we’re capacity strained. We wanted to build a casino initially that was palatable for the area and ensure we’re successful, and from there, our path is to grow and expand.”

Opening in May, the 20,000 square foot Harvest Buffet will seat 300 people in a dining hall and offer private dining rooms visitors can rent for small parties.

Head Chef Nicholas Manning said Harvest Buffet will offer a wide selection of cuisines at six stations. “We can tailor it to the person because we’ll have a live-action station. We will have our favorite dishes out there that are our style of food.” Manning noted he has been working with area farms to serve locally sourced meat and vegetables. “We want to present what’s seasonal, what’s trendy. We want to do something that changes the way you think of a casino buffet, or a buffet in general,” Manning said. He added the buffet also will feature West Michigan-based Hudsonville Ice Cream.

The existing Stage 131 bar will relocate into the expanded area and accommodate 100 guests, double its previous size. The venue will offer gaming and a lounge area, plus a stage offering live music from local and regional Michigan bands.

Three job fairs will be held to fill more than 100 jobs resulting from the expansion. Cooks, servers, security officer, dealers and others will be hired. Candidates must be at least 18 years old for certain positions; others require the jobseeker to be age 21 or older. Those who are offered a job will be required to pass a drug test and background check for a gaming license.
