The lockdown of casinos in Michigan has ended for the time being. Governor Gretchen Whitmer last week allowed high schools, theaters and casinos to reopen beginning today.
The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services last week reported that new cases of Covid 19 have been declining for the past 27 days, the percentage of hospital beds occupied has gone down for two weeks and positive tests have declined for the last 11 days.
The order allows the state’s commercial casinos—MotorCity Casino Hotel, Greektown Casino-Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit—to reopen on Monday, December 21. They have been closed since November 18. While the state’s tribal casinos were also urged to shut down, many of the remained open, albeit with reduced capacity and other limitations.
The shutdown for bars and restaurants has been extended to January 15, but may reopen before that “if we substantially sustain progress” in lowering the number of new cases of COVID-19.
“The pause is working,” Gordon said at a Friday afternoon news conference with Whitmer at the state Capitol in Lansing.
