Mille Lacs Band Renovating Casinos

Major renovations, from gaming floors to buffets, are about to begin at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe's Grand Casinos in Onamia (l.), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and in Hinckley, Minnesota. The tribe has diversified into hotel ownership and management and other hospitality businesses.

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s Grand Casino Mille Lacs in Onamia, Minnesota is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Joe Nayquonabe Jr., chief executive officer of Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, the business arm of the tribe, said, “Twenty-five years ago, the Mille Lacs Band had a vision of what Grand Casino Mille Lacs could contribute to the Mille Lacs area, but few people could have imagined how significant that impact would become. When a business approaches a large milestone anniversary like this, you often think of what else could be.”

The tribe, which opened the Grand Casino Hinckley 24 years ago, has diversified into hotel ownership/management and other hospitality and unrelated businesses. “Immediate and long-term trends suggest a softening in gaming for most operators in the Midwest. Seeking growth, as any good corporation is compelled to do, we put together a focused strategy. Gaming will always be at the core of what we do but it would be a mistake not to put those dollars to work by diversifying and investing in long-term appreciating assets that will ultimately bring about complete economic independence for our tribe,” Nayquonabe said.

Meanwhile, the tribe announced it will expand dining and entertainment offerings at both casinos. “These improvements underscore our commitment to providing the best experience for our loyal guests and associates. This is quite an undertaking that we are excited to begin, and we look forward to celebrating our continued success as we unveil each new upgrade,” Nayquonabe stated.

The gaming floors at both casinos will be completely reimagined. Mel Towle, general manager at Grand Casino Hinckley, said, “Everything from the ceiling and light fixtures to the wall treatments, carpet and property signage will be upgraded.”

At Grand Casino Mille Lacs, the former Woodlands Steakhouse space will be replaced by a Brand Burger Bar, a 4,600 square-foot sports-centric restaurant, and 1991 Kitchen, a 7,075 square foot casual dining option named in honor of the facility’s opening. Hinckley will offer a new 24-hour Stories Diner. Both casinos buffets will be renamed Grand Provisions and will be styled as food halls serving a wide variety of cuisines. “This food hall concept is a multifaceted culinary marketplace that will feature multiple distinct kitchens at each property offering a variety of American, Mexican, Italian and Asian inspired meals, along with homemade pastries and dessert selections,” said Tracy Sam, general manager of Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

Lola’s Taphouse, a restaurant featuring Minnesota’s favorite craft brews and ales, also will open at Mille Lacs.

Other upgrades will include a new associate dining area and break space at Mille Lacs and a new pool at Hinckley.
