Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee recently donated a record .17 million to 31 area charities that will benefit children. Previously the record was .09 million in 2008. Giving through its Heart of Canal Street program, the casino has made charitable contributions of more than million for four consecutive years.

Since it began in 1994, the Heart of Canal Street program has given nearly $17 million through 550 donations to children’s programs throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Potawatomi Hotel & Casino Bingo Director Melanie Martin said, “Raising a record breaking $1.1 million-plus for 31 Heart of Canal Street charities is incredible to celebrate. We can’t thank our bingo guests enough for their generosity and our employees for all of their hard work.”

Each of 30 of the charities received $35,821.31; 20 were randomly selected and 10 were signature charities of the casino. The property’s Charity of Choice, MKE Plays, received $100,000 to renovate a playground on the city’s near south side. Alderman Michael J. Murphy said, “It is especially heartwarming during this time of year – and during this frigid weather – to know that a generous gift from the Forest County Potawatomi to the community, and especially to the children of the near south side, will be bustling with laughter and fun during the warmer months for many years to come. The new and improved Witkowiak Park playground will be a valuable community and neighborhood asset for all to enjoy.”
