Since a state lottery launched in November, Mississippi has collected $16 million. The Mississippi Lottery Corp. said it deposited about $8.4 million into the state treasury on February 20 in net proceeds from January games and $7.6 million in net proceeds from December games.
For the first 10 years, the first $80 million in annual Mississippi lottery revenue will go toward infrastructure. After that, proceeds will go toward education. Following the first 10-year period, the first $80 million will go to the state’s general fund with the balance continuing to go toward education.
Mississippi legislators voted in 2018 to create the lottery as a revenue source for infrastructure. At that time, Mississippi was one of six states without a lottery; residents were driving to Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee to buy tickets, according to legislators.
