The future of legal sports betting in Missouri could be decided by voters in November.
The Missouri Secretary of State has yet to vet the signatures gathered for a campaign to get a sports betting measure on the ballot. But Winning for Missouri Education, the group behind the signature push, turned in 340,000 signatures, well above the 180,000 required.
The drive, organized by six pro teams in the state, earmarks the tax revenue for educational purposes.
“As one of only 12 states without legalized sports betting, Missouri took a significant step forward in ensuring that these revenues stay in Missouri to help our communities and classrooms,” Jack Cardetti, spokesperson for Winning for Missouri Education, said in a press release. “We are grateful for the support from Missouri’s professional sports franchises, who have been crucial in creating the opportunity for Missourians to vote directly.”
The ballot approach comes after legislative attempts failed in recent years.
“We stand united with all of Missouri’s professional sports franchises in support of the campaign and believe that it is time for Missourians to have the opportunity to legalize responsible sports betting, while generating tens of millions of dollars for our public schools each year,” Adam Sachs, senior vice president and chief external affairs officer of the Kansas City Royals, told Sports Handle.
The organizers expect the count to be completed in July. If on the ballot, a simple majority will pass the measure. The Missouri Gaming Commission would oversee regulations. The tax rate would be set at 10 percent.
