Mobile Gaming Accounts for 30 Percent of Internet Profits

The majority of revenue from internet gaming that goes through mobile gaming platforms is cannibalized from PCs and other internet platforms, according to a student conducted recently in the United Kingdom.

A recent study conducted in the United Kingdom shows that 30 percent of revenue generated through mobile gaming devices actually comes from new players who wouldn’t have been playing at other online venues, such as their computers.

The study, conducted by MECN, concluded that 70 percent of revenue from mobile platforms would have been generated by other sources if the mobile devices hadn’t been available. In other words, the bulk of mobile device revenue came from cannibalizing existing sources.

Because operators have typically been reluctant to provide such information, this study surveyed experts in online gaming, including some senior executives. More than half of the executives polled said that mobile gaming is actually PC revenue that has just been shifted from one platform to another.

Most of the executives also felt that more revenue is generated by the mobile platforms because it allows players the ability to play whenever and wherever they may be.
