Mohegan Sun Opens Convention Center

The Mohegan Sun has opened its $80 million Earth Expo & Convention Center, 125,000 square feet of convention space. It was the property’s second expansion in two years. The space is huge, half of it could accommodate four football fields. To celebrate the opening Tribal Chairman Kevin Brown rode a motorcycle as part of an escort for Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman.

More than 7,000 casino employees were invited to the ribbon cutting, as well as fed three free meals during the day.

Brown said the casino has “turned a corner” in its grasp for a larger share of the region’s trade show and convention business. “The Mohegan Tribe has been here for 400 years and it will be here forever,” he said.

The lieutenant governor replied “You have put us on the map. We will not forget all the help you’ve given us over the years.”

After the tribe’s earlier Expo Center began hosting sell-out events, the tribe began planning a much bigger venue, one where the arena and center might be booked concurrently. Already 20 major events have been scheduled through 2019.
