More Hotels, a Better Macau

Sands China executive Ruth Boston says the more, the merrier when it comes to hotel rooms in Macau. Boston made the comments as Sands Cotai Central (l.) marked its fifth year in business.

22,800 rooms with more to come

Concerns about an oversupply of hotel rooms in Macau’s Cotai district are unfounded, according to Sands China Senior Vice President of Marketing and Brand Management Ruth Boston.

Boston spoke to reporters while announcing promotions that will mark the fifth anniversary of Sands Cotai Central, which includes four hotel brands: the St. Regis, the Holiday Inn, Conrad and Sheraton.

According to Boston, more than 84 million visitors have visited Sands Cotai Central since it opened in 2012, including many families. “The more the better,” she said. “The more brands that are open, including our competitors, the better Macau is. It brings in more visitations, so more people come because there are more things to do.

Official data shows there are currently about 22,800 hotel rooms in Cotai, with about 3,000 more to be added when MGM Cotai and Grand Lisboa Palace open next year, reported GGRAsia.

“Competition does heat up but we’re very comfortable with the way we’re performing and our properties are running very well. So at this point in time, I think competition is healthy and we’re happy that there are more people coming to Macau,” Boston said.
