Most Puerto Rico Casinos Reopened

Although most of Puerto Rico still has no power since Hurricane Maria struck September 20, 13 of its 18 casinos have reopened, said Puerto Rick Tourism Company officials. Some are housing volunteers while others, like Oasis Casino at Embassy Suites, want to help visitors "enjoy, dance and forget the sorrows."

It’s been nearly four weeks since Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm and the 10th-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record, struck Puerto Rico on September 20. But although most of the island remains without power, as of Saturday, October 14, 13 of its 18 casinos were back in operation, said Jose Izquierdo, executive director of the tourism consortium, Puerto Rico Tourism Company. In addition, he said 81 of the 155 hotels the group endorses are open and cruise operations have resumed.

Izquierdo said several properties are participating in hurricane relief efforts by providing clean water, electricity, air conditioning and lodging for volunteers. However, some casinos, like Oasis Casino at Embassy Suites, posted in Facebook, “Oasis Casino brings you music to enjoy, dance and forget the sorrows.”
