MotorCity Glitch Traps Players, Payouts

A computer glitch at MotorCity Casino in Detroit caused gamblers' payouts--and gamblers--to be trapped for hours starting at midnight on a recent Friday. Some players waited five or more hours for casino workers to issue hand payouts. Casino officials blamed their Ticket Out System.

Numerous gamblers recently waited several hours to cash out at MotorCity Casino in Detroit after a computer glitch caused their money to be trapped inside gaming machines. The situation began around midnight on a recent Friday. Gamblers were told not to leave their machines as casino workers issued hand payouts and the first floor of the casino was closed. Casino officials said a problem with their Ticket Out System was to blame.

One gambler, Sharon Whitfield, said she waited five hours before an attendant paid her the $27 she had in the machine. “I think that they should update the machines, they’re old. And they should either give us some reward play or food comp for just all the hours we had to just sit,” Whitfield said.

Officials said the problem was fixed at around 6 a.m. and reopened the casino floor. The cause of the malfunction is being investigated.
