Movement to Decriminalize Fantasy Football in Arizona

Lawmakers in Arizona are trying, so far unsuccessfully, to make it legal for residents to play fantasy football, which is technically illegal.

Currently a strict interpretation of the law in Arizona would show that fantasy football is actually considered illegal gambling.

According to attorney Travis Leach, quoted by KTAR News, “By reading the statute, there are some problems with fantasy football in Arizona. I do think that there will be movements again to try to correct that.”

Leach asserts that recent actions by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to allow his state’s casinos and racetracks to offer sports betting might actually take off the pressure on what most people consider to be a harmless pastime: fantasy football.

Some Arizona lawmakers have sponsored bills to legalize fantasy football, but so far without success. Leach said, “Statutes have to catch with real life. I think you’ll eventually see some changes to make those technical legal arguments go away.”
