MP Pushes Reform Ahead of U.K. Gambling Review

Lord Foster, a Liberal Democrat member of the British House of Lords, has reiterated calls for reform to the U.K.’s gambling industry ahead of the Gambling Act review.

As reported by BBC News, Foster said it’s taken too long to overhaul regulatory oversight of gaming in the country. He is the chairman of Peers for Gambling Reform, which last year set out to add customer affordability checks, enforce stake limits on high-risk online casino games, establish a mandatory funding levy, ban sports sponsorships and classify loot boxes as new gambling verticals.

“The government has delayed and dithered, bringing forward the much-needed reforms which is why we are having to really get these reforms as quickly as possible,” Foster said.

He added that smart phones have led to “absolutely massive” growth in gambling, rendering the current regulations moot.

“There are a lot of changes urgently needed,” he said.
