Murren Not Phased by Possible Online Ban

With a federal online gambling ban pushed by Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson, MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren said Las Vegas and MGM will not be affected by such a ban, even if it were to pass.

Although many industry leaders feel the future of gambling will need online gaming to bring in the younger generation, MGM Resorts International CEO Jim Murren said a federal ban will not mean disaster for his company or for Nevada. Murren also commented on a possible federal legalization on sports betting, saying Nevada will not lose its near monopoly on the industry.

“I think people are going to Las Vegas for March Madness, they are going to go to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl. They are going to go, even if there is sports betting in New Jersey and other states,” Murren said. He added that people are drawn to Las Vegas for hotel, entertainment and food attractions.

“Our business model is not based on the Internet driving business to us,” Murren said. Murren was recently at the White House where he attended a State Dinner for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Murren was joined by AGA Executive Director Geoff Freeman to push efforts for building political clout in 2016.
