N.M. GOP Nominates Choctaw Clarkson for Secretary of State

The Republican party of New Mexico has nominated Gavin Clarkson for Secretary of State. Clarkson is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation.

The New Mexico state GOP has nominated Gavin Clarkson, an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation, for state Secretary of State. He was most recently a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior, a post he resigned in December to run for Congress.

The party had previously nominated JoHanna Cox, who withdrew, citing family issues. Clarkson lost a primary bid in the 2nd Congressional District on June 5.

Clarkson is a cum laude graduate of the Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Native American Law Students Association and was a member of the Federalist Society. He was the first member of a tribe to earn a doctorate from the Harvard Business School
