The New Mexico state GOP has nominated Gavin Clarkson, an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation, for state Secretary of State. He was most recently a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior, a post he resigned in December to run for Congress.
The party had previously nominated JoHanna Cox, who withdrew, citing family issues. Clarkson lost a primary bid in the 2nd Congressional District on June 5.
Clarkson is a cum laude graduate of the Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Native American Law Students Association and was a member of the Federalist Society. He was the first member of a tribe to earn a doctorate from the Harvard Business School
