Nagasaki IR Threatened by Surveillance Plan?

Officials in Nagasaki, Japan have expressed concern about the impact of Japan’s new security legislation on a planned integrated resort (IR).

The new legislation, pushed by right-leaning political factions, requires the government to establish special surveillance on land purchased and/or used by foreigners within a certain proximity to sensitive infrastructure, including military bases. The planned site of the prospective IR—the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo City—is also home to a naval base, meaning it would fall under the legislation. Moreover, the three bidding consortiums are led by or include foreign companies: Casinos Austria; Oshidori International Development and its partner, U.S.-based Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment; and the NIKI and its partner Chyau Fwu (Parkview) Group of Taiwan.
