The government of Namibia is preparing to lift a 20-year moratorium on gaming with the upcoming enactment of the 2018 Gambling and Entertainment Control Act, according to Minister of Environment and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta.

The country in southwest Africa has an estimated 3,000 illegal gaming halls and up to 100,000 unlicensed slot machines. The new legislation will require gaming venues to register their operations and open them to official monitoring.

Chairman Tomas Jindji of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce, said, “The industry wants to operate legally and we need to be licensed. The process should be straightforward, not cumbersome.”
