Navajo Nation Buys Land Near Casino

The Navajo Nation will purchase for $980,000 about 67 acres located less than one mile east from its Northern Edge Navajo Casino near Farmington, New Mexico. President Ben Shelly said the tribe's trust fund will pay for the land, which will be used for commercial development.

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly recently signed a resolution authorizing the purchase of 67.39 acres, owned by Rolling Mesa LLC, for 0,000. The property is located less than one mile east of the tribe’s Northern Edge Navajo Casino near Farmington, New Mexico. The tribe leased a portion of the land for a casino billboard.

The resolution states the land will be used for commercial development by the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise, the Upper Fruitland Chapter and the Division of Economic Development. Gaming Enterprise Chief Executive Officer Derrick Watchman said, “We support economic development efforts by the nation and if asked, will assist with its development.”

The real estate will be purchased with money from the tribe’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund and will be placed into trust status.
