Navajo Objection Delays Arizona Keno Bill

A bill that would allow the Arizona Lottery to offer keno has been withdrawn by its sponsor. The Navajo Nation had objected to the bill

After the Navajo Nation objected, the sponsor of a bill, SB1059, that would authorize keno in Arizona by the Arizona Lottery has delayed introducing it.

Last month an attorney for the tribe said the bill would violate the exclusivity guarantee in the state tribal Class III gaming compact. The compacts define keno as a Class III game. If the tribe’s exclusivity is violated it can withhold payments to the state.

Although Senator Sonny Borrelli withdrew the bill, he reportedly told Capitol Media Services that he is still interested in the idea. He was the author of a similar bill last year.
