The NCAA has been inundated with various sports betting probes of late.
What may be the first salvo came last year when University of Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon lost his job after an investigation into sports betting.
Then came a larger probe involving players and former players from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
The latest suspicious activity considered by the NCAA evolved from a recent game in which Temple University got thumped at home 100-72 by the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During a stretch of that game, the point spread shifted from UAB -2.5 to -8, according to VSiN. Nothing occurred to account for the move, no injury or suspension.
Suspicions grew that perhaps a point-shaving incident triggered the point-spread eruption.
American Athletic Conference (AAC) monitor US Integrity is also looking into the betting activity. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will assess the situation as well, a spokesperson told Legal Sports Report.
“We can confirm that we are clients of US Integrity. That is all the comment we will have at this time,” a spokesperson for the AAC said.
Temple released a statement of its own:
“We are aware of the social media posts. We will review the reports thoroughly in accordance with university and NCAA policies. While we can’t comment any further at this time, we take this matter very seriously.”
UAB outrebounded Temple 41-19, in the loss, the worst differential in 150 games, Temple conceded per SportsGrid.
