Nebraska Lottery Odds Measure Moves Forward

Unanimously approved legislation introduced by Senator Suzanne Geis (l.) moving through the Nebraska Senate would require the state lottery to prominently display in game advertisements the odds of winning the top prize. The bill would require print-ad odds to be shown in type at least 35 percent the size of the largest font and at least 10-point font in online ads.

Nebraska Lottery Odds Measure Moves Forward

A Nebraska Senate committee recently voted 38-0 to advance state Senator Suzanne Geis’ bill requiring the state lottery to prominently disclose in its game ads the odds of winning the biggest available prize. Geis said the measure is designed to help players understand the astronomical odds of winning a big payoff and to discourage people from playing when they can’t afford it.

The bill states the chances of winning would have to be displayed in a “clear and conspicuous manner.” In print ads, the odds would have to be shown in type at least 35 percent as large as the biggest font, and in at least 10 point font for online advertisements.

Two more votes will be required on the bill before it goes to the governor.
