Nebraska Tribe Makes Casino Employees Repay Bonuses

Nebraska’s Winnebago tribal council is making staffers of the WinnaVegas Casino Resort paid overtime and bonuses to return the money until it can be determined if the method of paying them was correct. The tribal treasurer has resigned over the issue.

The bonuses and overtime pay paid to managers and members of the staff of the WinnaVegas Casino Resort in Winnebago, Nebraska may have been legitimate, but the method of paying them was not, the tribal government declared last week.

So the casino employees are being required by the tribal council to repay the money. The council made the decision after questions about the payments were raised by several tribal members, according to tribal Chairman John Blackhawk. A few days after that meeting the tribal treasurer resigned.

“While the payments are a legitimate business expense, the process of the payments was not in accordance with applicable regulations,” said the tribe’s Facebook page. The process is being reviewed, and the tribe anticipates eventually paying the employees what they are owed.
